Congress Won't Win Elections In Kerala: Mani Shankar Aiyar Triggers Controversy Again

Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has sparked fresh controversy within his party following a series of sharp remarks targeting colleagues and praising political rivals. His statements have drawn criticism from party members in Kerala and at the national level, putting the Congress leadership on the defensive ahead of the state's upcoming Assembly elections.

In an interview with NDTV, Aiyar alleged deep divisions within the Kerala unit of the Congress, claiming that party leaders "hate themselves more than they hate the Communists." He singled out Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, describing him as a "puppet" of the party. "He has been accusing me for the past two years. If the Congress party cannot find anyone other than Pawan Khera to be its spokesperson, it will remain in the condition it's in," Aiyar said.

The veteran leader also criticised Shashi Tharoor, the four-time Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram, accusing him of aspiring to become the next foreign minister. These remarks came a day after Aiyar predicted a third consecutive term for Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, praising the state's progress in Panchayati Raj. He noted that Kerala leads in this area but ranks second in law.

Aiyar's comments have triggered strong reactions from within the Congress. Pawan Khera responded by stating that Aiyar has had no connection with the party for several years and speaks only in his personal capacity. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also dismissed Aiyar's remarks, asserting that the people of Kerala would bring the United Democratic Front (UDF) back to power for "more responsible and responsive governance."

He added on X, "Let there be no doubt. The people of Kerala will bring the UDF back. They also know that the LDF and BJP are covert partners."

Local leaders in Kerala expressed disapproval as well. Congress spokesperson Jinto John criticised Aiyar, describing him as an "intellectual who does not serve justice to the times or the common people." The remarks have added to the unease within the party, which is already grappling with internal challenges in the state.

Aiyar, who served as Union Minister for Panchayati Raj during the Congress-led UPA government, has often been known for outspoken views that have stirred debate. His latest statements, however, have intensified tensions within the party at a critical juncture, as Kerala prepares for its Assembly elections.
