Congress Supports Supreme Court Judges' Visit to Manipur, Criticises PM Modi for Inaction
The Congress party has expressed approval of the Supreme Court's decision to send six judges to Manipur. This visit is scheduled for March 22, as announced by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The judges aim to assess the situation in relief camps following ethnic violence in the state. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur despite its ongoing troubles.

Supreme Court Judges' Visit to Manipur
Justice B R Gavai, along with five other Supreme Court judges, will visit Manipur's relief camps. This visit coincides with the duodecennial celebrations of the Manipur High Court. NALSA stated that Justice Gavai, who is also its executive chairman, will be accompanied by justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, M M Sundresh, K V Viswanathan, and N Kotiswar Singh.
In a statement, NALSA highlighted the continued need for legal and humanitarian support for those affected by the violence. The visit underscores the importance of providing assistance to communities still grappling with the aftermath of the conflict. Many people remain in relief camps nearly two years after the violence erupted on May 3, 2023.
Background of Ethnic Violence
The ethnic violence in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, during a tribal solidarity march. The protest was against the Meitei community's demand for scheduled tribe status. This unrest resulted in over 200 deaths and displaced thousands. The violence led to a significant breakdown of constitutional order in the state, as noted by the Supreme Court in August 2023.
Jairam Ramesh criticised Prime Minister Modi for his silence on Manipur's situation. He pointed out that Modi travels extensively but has not visited Manipur. Ramesh emphasised that people in Manipur are still waiting for Modi's attention and visit.
Legal and Humanitarian Initiatives
During their visit, Justice Gavai will virtually inaugurate legal service camps and medical camps across Manipur. New legal aid clinics will also be opened in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul districts. According to NALSA, essential relief materials will be distributed to internally displaced persons during this time.
The Congress party's support for the judges' visit reflects its concern over the ongoing crisis in Manipur. The party hopes that this initiative will bring much-needed attention and aid to those affected by the violence.
The judges' visit aims to address both legal and humanitarian needs in Manipur. It highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities affected by ethnic violence and underscores the necessity for continued support and intervention.
