Congress-TMC Clash Over Seat Sharing in West Bengal: Alliance in Disarray

The Congress and Trinamool Congress, key allies in the INDIA alliance, are at loggerheads over seat sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal. The Congress state presidents refusal to beg for seats and the TMCs criticism of his remarks have highlighted the growing rift within the alliance.

The INDIA alliance, comprising the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), is facing internal strife as the two parties engage in a public spat over seat sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.

Congress-TMC Alliance on the Brink: Seat Sharing Dispute Threatens Unity

Congress Accuses TMC of Neglecting Alliance

State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury launched a scathing attack on the TMC, accusing the ruling party of Bengal of prioritizing its relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over strengthening the opposition alliance. Chowdhury asserted that the Congress would not "beg" for seats from the TMC and challenged Mamata Banerjee to contest against him from his home turf, Berhampore, in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

TMC Criticizes Chowdhury's Remarks

The TMC responded swiftly to Chowdhury's remarks, criticizing him for making "callous" statements and urging the Congress high command to rein in their state president. Senior TMC MP Sougata Roy emphasized that badmouthing the TMC and Mamata Banerjee while seeking an alliance was unacceptable. Roy questioned Chowdhury's claims about the TMC offering only two seats and reiterated that the TMC would lead the fight against the BJP in Bengal, while the INDIA alliance would spearhead the nationwide campaign.

History of Discontent in Congress-TMC Alliance

The Congress and TMC have a history of electoral alliances, including the 2001 assembly polls, 2009 Lok Sabha elections, and 2011 assembly polls. However, their alliance has been marked by discontent, with the Congress accusing the TMC of depriving them of legitimate seats in previous elections. In 2011, the Congress-TMC alliance defeated the 34-year-old Left Front regime in West Bengal.

TMC Sets Deadline for Seat-Sharing Agreement

During the December 19 INDIA opposition bloc meeting, the TMC set a December 31 deadline for finalizing the seat-sharing agreement, a demand that remains unmet. Mamata Banerjee had initially expressed confidence in a three-way alliance involving the TMC, Congress, and the Left, but later accused the CPIM and Congress of colluding with the BJP in West Bengal.

The ongoing conflict between the Congress and TMC threatens the stability of the INDIA alliance and raises questions about the viability of a united opposition front against the BJP in West Bengal. The outcome of the seat-sharing negotiations and the future of the alliance will have significant implications for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state.
