Congress Appoints Jay Narayan Patnaik for Puri Seat Following Funding Row

In a significant development within the Indian political landscape, the Congress party has announced Jay Narayan Patnaik as its new candidate for the Puri Lok Sabha seat in Odisha. This decision came after Sucharita Mohanty withdrew her candidacy, citing a lack of financial support from the party for her campaign efforts. The announcement was made late Saturday night, marking a pivotal change in the party's strategy for the upcoming election in Puri.

Patnaik Named for Puri After Funding Issue

Sucharita Mohanty, who is the daughter of former Congress MP Brajamohan Mohanty, expressed her concerns through an email to KC Venugopal, Congress general secretary. In her communication, she highlighted the financial challenges she faced, which severely impacted her campaign. Mohanty revealed that despite her efforts to launch a public donation drive and minimize campaign expenses, the absence of party funding made it untenable for her to continue her electoral fight.

The Congress party, through a statement by KC Venugopal, confirmed that Mallikarjun Kharge, the party president, has approved Jay Narayan Patnaik as the candidate for the Puri Lok Sabha seat, replacing Mohanty. This decision underscores the party's intent to recalibrate its approach in Puri amidst the evolving political dynamics.

Mohanty's withdrawal sheds light on the broader issue of campaign financing and its critical role in electoral politics. She lamented the allocation of tickets to what she perceived as weak candidates in assembly segments under the Puri Lok Sabha constituency. Moreover, Mohanty pointed out the financial might of opposition parties such as BJP and BJD, describing their campaign displays as overwhelming.

In response to Mohanty's claims regarding financial support, Ajoy Kumar, Congress in-charge of Odisha, stated that funds are typically disbursed once a candidate initiates their campaign and demonstrates serious commitment on the ground. The electoral battle in Puri is set to be intense, with BJP fielding its national spokesperson Sambit Patra and BJD nominating ex-IPS Arup Patnaik, a former Mumbai Police commissioner. The constituency is scheduled to vote on May 25.

Despite her withdrawal from the race, Mohanty affirmed her continued allegiance to the Congress party. Her situation underscores the challenges candidates face without adequate financial backing and highlights the competitive nature of electoral politics in India. As Puri prepares for its upcoming election, all eyes will be on how these developments influence voter sentiment and the overall political landscape in Odisha.
