Congress Commits to Freeing Jammu & Kashmir from Dictatorial Rule, Says Alka Lamba

All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba, during her first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since her appointment, voiced strong criticism against the current government's handling of the region. On Friday, upon her arrival at the Jammu airport, Lamba articulated a promise of liberation for Jammu and Kashmir from what she termed a "dictatorial government." Her comments come amidst a backdrop of significant political changes in the region, including the abrogation of Article 370 and the imposition of President's rule.

Congress to Liberate J&K: Lamba

Lamba accused the BJP-led central government of neglecting critical issues such as development, unemployment, and inflation, focusing instead on divisive religious politics. "The people of Jammu and Kashmir have faced the worst under the dictatorial government over the years," she stated, emphasizing the need for freedom from such governance. She also criticized the central government for revoking Jammu and Kashmir's statehood and attempting to govern it directly from Delhi.

The Congress leader praised the Supreme Court's directive to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, expressing hope for the restoration of its statehood under an INDIA alliance government. This statement refers to a landmark judgement by the Supreme Court on December 11 last year, mandating that assembly elections be conducted by September 30.

Lamba's visit is primarily aimed at supporting Congress candidate Raman Bhalla for the Jammu Lok Sabha seat. With polling scheduled for April 26 in the second phase of elections, her campaign efforts are in full swing. Throughout her interactions, Lamba has been vocal about her criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of neglecting vital national issues in favor of religious discourse.

Her remarks underscore a broader critique of the central government's policies in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly following the controversial decision on August 5, 2019, to abrogate Article 370. This move stripped the region of its special status and has been a point of contention ever since. Lamba's visit and statements highlight ongoing political tensions and the demand for a reevaluation of Jammu and Kashmir's administrative status.
