Congress Picks Abhishek Singhvi for Telangana Rajya Sabha Bypoll
The Congress party has selected Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha bypoll in Telangana. This vacancy arose after K Keshava Rao resigned from the House, having left the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to join Congress. Rao was subsequently appointed as an adviser to the Telangana government, a position with Cabinet rank.

Congress Majority in Telangana
With Congress holding a majority in Telangana, Singhvi is expected to secure a win in the bypoll. Elections for 12 Rajya Sabha seats across nine states, including Telangana, are scheduled for September 3. The party's president, Mallikarjun Kharge, has endorsed Singhvi's candidacy for the Council of States from Telangana.
Singhvi expressed his gratitude on X, stating, "My sincere gratitude to the Congress President, Shri Kharge, to two former CPs, Sonia ji & Rahul ji, to Priyanka ji and to all senior leadership for the trust and faith reposed in me." This statement reflects his appreciation for the support from senior party leaders.
Previous Election Outcome
Earlier this year, Singhvi faced a setback in Himachal Pradesh's Rajya Sabha election. Despite Congress ruling the state, Singhvi lost to BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan. Both candidates received 34 votes each in the February 27 election, leading to a draw of lots to determine the winner.
The Congress had 40 members and support from three Independents in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly. However, six Congress rebels and three Independents voted for Mahajan. The election officer's procedure declared Singhvi the loser through a draw of lots.
The upcoming bypoll presents an opportunity for Singhvi to re-enter the Upper House. His previous loss underscores the unpredictable nature of elections and the importance of party unity.
