Congress Appoints Devender Yadav as Interim President of Delhi Unit
In a significant political development, the Congress party has named former MLA Devender Yadav as the interim president of its Delhi unit. This appointment comes in the wake of Arvinder Singh Lovely's resignation from the position, which he attributed to disagreements over the party's alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and concerns regarding statements made by Congress candidates in Delhi. Yadav, who has previously represented the Badli assembly constituency in 2008 and 2013, takes on this new role while continuing his duties as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Punjab.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge confirmed Yadav's appointment through a formal statement, emphasizing its immediate effect. This strategic move is seen as part of the party's preparations for the upcoming May 25 election for the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. The reshuffling at the top echelons of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) underscores the internal dynamics and challenges faced by the party, especially following Lovely's pointed criticism towards party decisions and alliances.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, in his resignation letter, expressed his frustration over what he perceived as unilateral decisions by AICC Delhi in-charge Deepak Babaria, which contradicted the collective decisions of senior Delhi unit leaders. He highlighted his opposition to the alliance with AAP and criticized the selection of Kanhaiya Kumar and Udit Raj as Congress candidates for Northeast and Northwest Delhi, respectively, citing their lack of familiarity with the party's policies and principles.
The resignation has brought to light the factional disputes within the party, with some leaders calling for Babaria's removal. Despite these internal conflicts, Babaria remarked that Lovely's departure would not impact the Congress adversely. Meanwhile, reactions from other political parties have been swift, with the BJP labeling the AAP-Congress alliance as "unnatural" and aimed at covering up corruption. The AAP has dismissed these developments as internal matters of the Congress.
It is noteworthy that this is not Lovely's first resignation from a key post within the Delhi Congress; he previously stepped down in 2015 and briefly joined the BJP in 2017 before returning to Congress nine months later. This series of events reflects ongoing turbulence within the party as it navigates alliances and leadership roles ahead of crucial electoral contests.
The appointment of Devender Yadav as interim president signifies a pivotal moment for the Congress in Delhi, aiming to consolidate its position and address internal dissent as it gears up for the Lok Sabha elections. How this leadership change will influence the party's prospects and its relationship with allies remains a closely watched aspect of Delhi's political landscape.
