Karnataka Congress Leadership Requests Legislators to Avoid Public Statements Amid Leadership Change Speculations

The Congress leadership in Karnataka, along with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urged party legislators to refrain from making public statements. They emphasised the importance of adhering to decisions made by the party's high command. This directive was conveyed during a Congress Legislature Party meeting attended by Congress general secretaries Randeep Singh Surjewala and Jairam Ramesh.

Leadership Change Speculations

The call for restraint comes amid speculations about a potential leadership change within the state. Some Congress members, including ministers, have been openly discussing this possibility with the media. The buzz intensified after Siddaramaiah recently dined with select Dalit and ST Cabinet colleagues at Minister Satish Jarkiholi's residence.

This dinner sparked rumours about a possible change in leadership after the state budget in March. The discussions revolve around a rotational chief minister or a power-sharing arrangement. Such an agreement was reportedly reached in 2023 after the party's victory, with both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar competing for the top position.

Power-Sharing Formula

Currently serving as Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar and his supporters are reportedly waiting for Siddaramaiah to step down as per the power-sharing formula. However, sources indicate that Siddaramaiah's followers are not keen on accepting Shivakumar as the leader. This internal dynamic adds complexity to the ongoing leadership discussions.

During the meeting, Siddaramaiah assured legislators that he would order the immediate release of Rs 10 crore to each MLA for constituency development. He also promised additional grants in the upcoming budget, aiming to address concerns and maintain support within the party ranks.

The situation remains fluid as Congress leaders navigate these internal challenges while trying to maintain unity and focus on governance in Karnataka.
