Congress Leader Shama Mohamed 'Fat Shames' India Skipper Rohit Sharma, BJP Claps Back With Rahul Gandhi Jibe

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has ignited controversy with her scathing criticism of Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, describing him as "fat for a sportsman" and labelling his captaincy as "the most unimpressive" in the nation's history.

Taking to social media, Mohamed remarked, "Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had!" Her comments immediately provoked backlash, particularly from BJP leaders and cricket fans.

In response to a user who defended Sharma as a "world-class player," Mohamed dismissed the claim, questioning his legacy in comparison to Indian cricketing legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Kapil Dev.

"What is so world-class about him when compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India," she wrote.

The BJP swiftly condemned Mohamed's remarks, accusing Congress of "body-shaming" and disrespecting a World Cup-winning captain. BJP leader Radhika Khera, who previously left Congress to join the BJP, accused her former party of having "humiliated athletes for decades."

"This is the same Congress that humiliated athletes for decades, denied them recognition, and now dares to mock a cricketing legend? The party that thrives on nepotism is lecturing a self-made champion?" Khera said.

She also took aim at Rahul Gandhi, remarking that while Rohit Sharma had led India to a World Cup victory, the Congress leader struggled to manage his own party without leading it into turmoil.

Additionally, she criticised Jairam Ramesh, urging him to focus on Congress' dwindling relevance, credibility, and electoral performance instead of targeting a cricketer who had brought glory to the nation.

"Congress should worry about its own sinking dynast before taking cheap shots at India's pride!" she stated.

Meanwhile, India secured a dominant 44-run victory over New Zealand in their final group-stage match of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Although captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed early, India posted a modest total of 249 in their allotted 50 overs.

The bowling attack, led by Varun Chakaravarthy, delivered an exceptional performance, dismantling the Kiwi batting line-up and bowling them out for 205.

With this victory, India advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face Australia in a high-stakes clash on March 4.
