Congress leader Navjot Sidhu likely to be out of jail on April 1

Jailed Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is likely to be out of prison on Saturday, the official Twitter account handled his team posted on Friday.

Congress leader Navjot Sidhu likely to be out of jail on April 1

"This is to inform everyone that Sardar Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala Jail tomorrow. (As informed by the concerned authorities)," it posted.

Former MLA and Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who has been diagnosed with cancer, shared her heartfelt message as the news of her husband's release from jail was out.

She said, "Affirmations are true: made by a sound mind or out of your senses. Navjot's love for Punjab had driven him beyond the realm of any attachment. In a fit of anger,to teach him a lesson I asked for death. God's grace was waiting but with a rider.

"I will give you what you have asked for but not against the will of Supreme Consciousness. So HE left me in between. Each person's destiny and journey is different. We have no right to question it. The only person who needs correction is our own self. HIS WORLD: HIS LAWS," she added.

Last May, the Supreme Court had sentenced Sidhu to one-year rigorous imprisonment in the road-rage case, saying any undue sympathy in imposing an inadequate sentence would do more harm to the justice system and undermine the public confidence in the efficacy of law.

A 65-year-old man had died in the road rage incident.

The apex court had on May 15, 2018, set aside the Punjab and Haryana High Court order convicting Sidhu of culpable homicide and awarding him a three-year jail term in the case, but had held him guilty of causing hurt to a senior citizen.

According to the prosecution, Sidhu and Sandhu were in a Gypsy parked in the middle of a road near the Sheranwala Gate Crossing in Patiala on December 27, 1988, when the victim and two others were on their way to the bank to withdraw money.

When they reached the crossing, it was alleged, that Gurnam Singh, driving a Maruti car, found the Gypsy in the middle of the road and asked the occupants, Sidhu and Sandhu, to remove it. This led to heated exchanges.

Sidhu was acquitted of murder charges by the trial court in September 1999.
