Congress Seeks Dismissal of Haryana Govt, Demands Fresh Elections

In a significant political development in Haryana, the Congress party has officially approached Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, seeking the dismissal of the state's BJP-led minority government. This request was articulated through a memorandum submitted on Friday by senior Congress leaders, including the party's chief whip B.B. Batra and deputy CLP leader Aftab Ahmed. This move comes in the wake of three Independent MLAs retracting their support from Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's administration.

Congress Calls for New Haryana Polls

The Congress's action underscores a tumultuous phase in Haryana's political landscape, marked by the withdrawal of support by Independent MLA Balraj Kundu some years prior, alongside the recent departures. The memorandum emphatically states that these developments have effectively reduced the government to a minority status within the legislative assembly.

Amidst these unfolding events, a cabinet meeting has been convened on May 15 under Chief Minister Saini's leadership. Although the agenda remains undisclosed, it is anticipated amidst a backdrop of rapid political shifts within the state. The Haryana assembly, which comprises 90 seats, currently operates with 88 members due to vacancies in the Karnal and Rania constituencies.

Despite these challenges, Chief Minister Saini and former Chief Minister M.L. Khattar have expressed confidence in the stability and majority of their government. Khattar highlighted the government's success in a confidence vote on March 13 and hinted at ongoing discussions with various MLAs, suggesting a potential reversal of the recent withdrawals.

The Congress memorandum presents a different perspective, claiming that a coalition of 45 MLAs opposes the current government, surpassing the 43 MLAs purportedly in support of it. This assertion is aimed at demonstrating a loss of majority confidence in Chief Minister Saini's administration.

Batra clarified that the Congress is not seeking to form a government under the current circumstances but is advocating for fresh elections under President’s rule to prevent any undemocratic practices such as horse-trading. The memorandum also highlights an appeal to Governor Dattatreya to exercise his constitutional authority by either dismissing the government or convening the Vidhan Sabha for a confidence vote.

The document further criticizes the incumbent government for clinging to power through technicalities, arguing that such actions undermine democratic principles. It calls for immediate action from the Governor to uphold democratic values and restore public faith in the system.

As this political saga unfolds, Batra mentioned that they had to submit the memorandum to the Governor’s secretary due to Dattatreya's absence. He also hinted at possible legal action depending on the Governor's response, emphasizing the constitutional significance of this decision-making process.

This episode marks a critical juncture in Haryana’s political narrative, with potential implications for governance and democratic integrity in the state. As both sides present their arguments and await further developments, the situation remains fluid with all eyes on Governor Dattatreya’s next move.
