Congress Cheers Yunus on Leading Bangladesh Towards Peace and Stability
The Congress extended congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday for being sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. Rahul Gandhi emphasised the urgent need for peace and normalcy in the country. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took over from Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled to India amid deadly protests against her government over a controversial job quota system.

Congress Leaders Express Support
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge shared his sentiments on X, stating, "On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I extend our good wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on being sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government." He added, "We sincerely hope that normalcy and peace return in Bangladesh, our neighbour, with whom we Indians share a historic relationship. We pray for the safety of all the Bangladeshi people, including all the minorities."
In a separate post on X, Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Yunus, reiterating that "a swift restoration of peace and normalcy is the need of the hour." The former Congress chief stressed the importance of stability in Bangladesh.
Yunus Takes Oath
Muhammad Yunus, aged 84, was administered the oath of office by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at a ceremony held at Bangabhaban, the presidential palace. This transition marks a significant change in leadership following Sheikh Hasina's abrupt resignation.
Advisory Council Announced
To assist Yunus in managing state affairs, a 16-member council of advisers was announced. Among them were Md Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, notable organisers of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. This council aims to support Yunus during this critical period.
Sheikh Hasina's departure left Bangladesh in turmoil after violent protests erupted over her government's controversial job quota system. The protests highlighted deep-seated issues within the country, necessitating immediate intervention and leadership change.
The Indian National Congress expressed its hope for a peaceful resolution and stability in Bangladesh. The party underscored the historical ties between India and Bangladesh and wished for the well-being of all citizens, including minorities.
The new interim government under Yunus faces significant challenges ahead. Restoring peace and addressing public grievances will be crucial for stabilising the nation. The international community is closely watching these developments.
The swift action by Yunus and his advisory council will be pivotal in navigating Bangladesh through this turbulent period. Their efforts will determine how quickly normalcy can be restored in the country.
Bangladesh's political landscape has been significantly altered by these recent events. The focus now shifts to how effectively Yunus can lead and implement necessary changes to address ongoing issues.
The situation remains fluid as Yunus steps into his new role. His leadership will be tested as he works towards bringing stability back to Bangladesh amidst ongoing challenges.
The concluding remarks from Congress leaders highlight their support for Yunus and their hopes for a peaceful resolution in Bangladesh. The emphasis remains on restoring normalcy and ensuring safety for all citizens during this transitional phase.
