Congress Names Candidates for Haryana Lok Sabha Seats, Including Kumari Selja, Deepender Hooda
In a significant political development, the Congress party has unveiled its list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Haryana. Among the notable names are former Union minister Kumari Selja and Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda, who have been chosen to contest from Sirsa and Rohtak constituencies, respectively. This announcement sets the stage for a series of closely watched electoral battles in the state.

Kumari Selja is set to face off against her former colleague and now BJP candidate Ashok Tanwar in the Sirsa-SC Lok Sabha constituency. Both Selja and Tanwar have previously held the position of Haryana Congress chiefs, making their contest one of the most anticipated in the state. Selja, who has represented Sirsa-SC in the past, currently serves as the Congress general secretary and oversees the party's affairs in Uttarakhand.
Deepender Hooda, aiming for a fourth term, will compete against BJP's Arvind Sharma in Rohtak. Hooda's candidacy is significant given his lineage as the son of former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his previous successes in representing Rohtak in Parliament.
The Congress has also fielded new faces and seasoned politicians across other constituencies. Divanshu Budhiraja, president of the party's Haryana youth wing, is set to challenge former chief minister and BJP candidate Manohar Lal Khattar in Karnal. Meanwhile, former MP Jai Prakash will represent the party in Hisar, a seat that saw a recent switch by Brijendra Singh from BJP to Congress.
Strategic Candidate Placement
In addition to these strategic placements, the Congress list includes Satpal Brahmachari for Sonipat and Mahendra Pratap for Faridabad. The party has also nominated two sitting MLAs - Varun Choudhary from Ambala-SC and Rao Dan Singh from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh - showcasing a blend of youth and experience in its selection.
This announcement comes amid criticisms from rival parties, including the BJP, regarding delays in candidate declaration by Congress. Accusations of avoiding electoral contests due to fear of defeat and internal disagreements within the Haryana unit have been levied against Congress by leaders such as Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
The BJP had previously announced its candidates for six Lok Sabha seats on March 13, with the remaining four names disclosed on March 24. With voting in Haryana scheduled for May 25 during the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election, political activities in the state are intensifying.
Looking Ahead
The Congress's decision to field experienced politicians alongside new entrants reflects a strategic approach to regain foothold in Haryana. With 400 aspirants having applied for Congress tickets, the selection process underscores the party's efforts to present a formidable challenge to its opponents. As election day approaches, all eyes will be on these key contests to gauge whether Congress can translate its strategic candidate placements into electoral victories.
