Congress Appeased Waqf Board For Vote Bank Politics: PM Modi Says Waqf Laws Not Mentioned In Constitution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the Congress party on Saturday, accusing it of engaging in appeasement politics. Delivering the victory speech after claiming majority in Maharashtra, PM claimed that the Waqf Board was used as a tool to secure votes. "Congress made laws to promote appeasement politics, and the Waqf Board is an example of it," PM Modi stated. He spoke at the BJP headquarters following the Maharashtra Assembly election results.

PM Modi alleged that before Congress's rule ended in 2014, they transferred several properties near Delhi to the Waqf Board. He argued that this move disregarded the Supreme Court's ruling. According to him, Congress prioritised its vote bank over constitutional values by supporting Waqf laws not included in Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution.

Waqf Amendment Bill Sparks Debate

The Prime Minister's comments come just a week before Parliament's Winter session, where 16 bills are listed, including the Waqf Amendment Bill. This bill aims to rename the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act. The Centre introduced it to reform how properties linked to mosques and Muslim endowments are managed.

While the government describes this bill as a move towards transparency in managing Waqf properties, opposition parties and Muslim organisations express concerns. They argue that it grants excessive powers to the government and threatens community-owned properties. The debate around this bill highlights differing views on property management and community rights.

Secular Values Under Scrutiny

PM Modi accused Congress of undermining secular values enshrined in India's Constitution for political gain. He claimed that their actions were driven by a desire for power rather than upholding constitutional principles. His remarks reflect ongoing tensions between political parties over issues related to religious communities and property management.

The Prime Minister's statements have intensified discussions around secularism and governance in India. As Parliament prepares for its upcoming session, these debates are likely to continue shaping legislative priorities and public discourse.

The controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Bill underscores broader concerns about balancing transparency with community autonomy. As lawmakers deliberate on this issue, they must consider diverse perspectives to ensure fair governance of religious properties.
