Congress Braces for 'Legislative Grenades' in Impending Parliament Session
The Congress has criticised the government's agenda for the upcoming five-day session of Parliament, expressing concerns that major legislative changes may be introduced at the last moment. The current agenda includes a special discussion on 75 years of Parliament and a bill regarding election commissioners.
The Indian National Congress has expressed concerns over the agenda set for the forthcoming parliamentary session, describing it as "much ado about nothing". The party's apprehensions stem from its belief that the government may be planning to introduce significant legislative changes at short notice. This assertion was made by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday, September 13.
Parliamentary Session's Agenda Under Scrutiny

The government has outlined a special discussion on Parliament's journey of 75 years, commencing from the Samvidhan Sabha era, to take place on the first day of the five-day parliamentary session beginning September 18. Additionally, they have listed a bill regarding the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners for consideration and passage. This bill was initially introduced in Rajya Sabha during the previous Monsoon session.
Congress' Concerns Over Government Transparency
In a social media post on platform X, Jairam Ramesh voiced his concerns over this agenda. He stated: "Finally, after pressure from Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his government has condescended to announce the agenda for this special five-day session." He further added that all items currently listed could have been deferred until November's Winter Session.
Ramesh also suggested that there might be more critical legislation waiting in wings which will be unveiled without prior warning or sufficient time for debate and scrutiny. Using an evocative metaphor he said: "I am sure legislative grenades are being kept up their sleeves to be unleashed at last moment."
A Call For Greater Legislative Transparency
This statement by Ramesh underscores Congress’ demand for greater transparency in how legislative matters are handled by Modi’s administration. It indicates their concern over potential surprises in policy-making processes which may not provide enough time for thorough analysis and debate, thus undermining the democratic process. The party has often accused the government of using parliamentary sessions to push through contentious legislation without adequate discussion or opposition scrutiny.
In conclusion, while the Congress’ critique is a part of its role as an Opposition party in calling out potential discrepancies in policy-making processes, it also highlights broader issues concerning legislative transparency and accountability. It remains to be seen how this will play out during the upcoming session and whether their concerns about "legislative grenades" will prove well-founded. Regardless, these debates are essential for maintaining a vibrant democracy where all significant decisions are subject to rigorous examination and open dialogue.
