Congress Reveals Candidates for Eight Lok Sabha Seats in West Bengal

In a significant political development from Kolkata, dated March 21, the Congress party has unveiled its third list of candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, spotlighting 56 nominees. This announcement includes candidates for eight of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal, a state where the Congress currently holds two seats - Berhampore and Maldaha Dakshin.

Congress Lists West Bengal Candidates

Among the notable names featured in this list is Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha and a five-term MP from Berhampore. Chowdhury, aged 67, is recognized as a significant figure within the party, holding the position of West Bengal Congress president. His re-nomination sets up an anticipated electoral battle against Yusuf Pathan, a cricketer-turned-politician representing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Chowdhury, often referred to as the Robin Hood of Berhampore, secured his seat in 2019 with an impressive margin of over 80,000 votes, translating to a 45.5 percent vote share.

Another prominent candidate is Isha Khan Choudhury from Maldaha Dakshin, succeeding his father Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury, a four-term sitting MP. Isha, with a political career spanning from 2011 to 2021 as a Congress MLA and an attempt in the Sujapur assembly seat in 2021, brings a blend of international exposure and local political experience to the table.

Pradip Bhattacharya steps into the fray for Kolkata North. With an extensive political background that includes terms as both a Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MP, Bhattacharya's candidacy introduces a seasoned contender against TMC's Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

Strategic Electoral Moves

The Congress party's strategy also extends to other key constituencies such as Jangipur, Raiganj, Maldah Uttar, Purulia, and Birbhum. Murtoza Hossain from Jangipur, Nepal Mahato from Purulia, Ali Amran Ramz from Raiganj, Mostaque Alam from Maldah Uttar, and Milton Rashid from Birbhum are among those nominated. This diverse slate of candidates underscores the party's efforts to regain its foothold in West Bengal's political landscape.

The announcement not only highlights the Congress's intent to make significant electoral gains but also reflects ongoing negotiations with the Left for a potential seat-sharing arrangement in West Bengal. As these developments unfold, all eyes will be on these key constituencies as they could play a pivotal role in shaping the state's political future.

The selection of candidates such as Chowdhury and Bhattacharya signifies the party's reliance on experienced leaders to challenge the TMC's dominance in West Bengal. Meanwhile, fresh faces like Isha Khan Choudhury represent the infusion of new energy and perspectives within the party ranks.

With these strategic nominations, the Congress aims to present a formidable challenge in West Bengal, leveraging both seasoned leadership and new blood to appeal to a broad spectrum of voters. As the election campaign intensifies, it remains to be seen how these electoral dynamics will influence the political landscape in West Bengal.
