Gastroenterologist D Nageshwar Reddy Emphasises Commitment to Public Health and Medical Innovation

Renowned gastroenterologist and Chairman of AIG Hospitals, D Nageshwar Reddy, expressed his gratitude upon being selected for the Padma Vibhushan. He described the honour as both humbling and significant. This award marks him as the first medical doctor in India to receive all three Padma Awards: Padma Shri in 2002, Padma Bhushan in 2016, and now Padma Vibhushan in 2025.

Nageshwar Reddys Commitment to Public Health

Reddy attributes this recognition to his patients, his team at AIG Hospitals, and healthcare workers who inspire him daily. "This is not just a personal milestone, but a celebration of the spirit of Indian medicine and the immense potential our great nation holds in healthcare innovation," he stated. As a proud Indian from Telugu soil, he remains committed to advancing India's medical excellence globally.

Focus on Gastroenterology Innovation

Reddy has dedicated over four decades to advancements in gastroenterology. After completing his DM Gastroenterology at PGIMER, Chandigarh, he specialised in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. At that time, this field was just emerging in India. His work has significantly improved the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.

The Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad were founded by Reddy. These institutions have grown into some of the world's largest centres for gastroenterology, GI Endoscopy, and hepatology. His contributions have been pivotal in establishing these centres as leaders in their field.

Academic Contributions and Global Recognition

As an academician, Reddy has authored over 1,000 peer-reviewed articles and delivered keynote lectures at esteemed medical conferences worldwide. His research has earned him numerous international accolades, including the Master of the World Gastroenterology Organisation Award and the Rudolf V. Schindler Award, which is the highest honour in gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Beyond his medical achievements, Reddy is a strong advocate for public health and healthcare accessibility in India. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he and his team developed protocols for managing gastrointestinal symptoms in coronavirus patients. This work further highlights his commitment to improving healthcare outcomes.

Reddy's journey reflects a lifelong dedication to medical innovation, education, and research. His efforts have not only advanced gastroenterology but also positioned India as a leader in medical excellence on the global stage. His recognition with the Padma Vibhushan underscores these contributions.
