CJI B R Gavai Celebrates Contributions of Lal Narayan Sinha and Shanti Bhushan at Supreme Court Ceremony

Chief Justice of India B R Gavai recently unveiled portraits of Lal Narayan Sinha and Shanti Bhushan at the Supreme Court. He described them as reflections of constitutional values and inspirations for future legal professionals. The CJI paid homage to both the former attorney general and the former law minister, highlighting their dedication to the Constitution.

The CJI emphasised that Sinha and Bhushan were not just brilliant lawyers but also citizens whose commitment to the Constitution was central to their lives. Their careers exemplified professional excellence, moral courage, and public service. According to him, they remind us that a lawyer's true worth lies in defending justice, upholding constitutional values, and protecting democracy, even during challenging times.

Contributions to Constitutional Law

Justice Gavai recalled Sinha's expertise in constitutional and administrative law. He noted that Sinha's advocacy in landmark cases like Golak Nath and Kesavananda Bharati significantly influenced the Constitution's essence. His foresight was legendary, as he anticipated debates that would define the Basic Structure doctrine, now a cornerstone of India's constitutional democracy.

Shanti Bhushan was praised by Justice Gavai as a statesman of the Bar. His courage, vision, and integrity were said to have fortified India's democratic foundations. As India's Law Minister from 1977 to 1979, he played a vital role in restoring democratic values post-Emergency. He also co-founded the Centre for Public Interest Litigation, institutionalising public interest litigation.
