CJI DY Chandrachud Says No Case Is Small, Supreme Court Is Always There For Citizens

Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, in conversation with NDTV, said, "Irrespective of wealth, social status, caste, religion, or gender or who is in power", the Supreme Court is always there for citizens of this country. CJI underlined that "no case is too small for the highest court of the land". Sharing his views on the use of technology to get justice, CJI said "Sometimes I get e-mails in the middle of the night. Once there was a woman who needed medical termination of a pregnancy... my staff contacted me and we constituted a bench the next day".

The Apex Court gives special attention to special cases, that may impact the lives of common man at large. "Kisi ka ghar demolish ho gaya... kisi ko usi ke ghar se bahar nikaal diya... kisi ko surrender karna hai lekin vo beemar hai (someone's house may have been demolished... someone may have been thrown out of their house... someone may need to surrender but they are unwell)... all these heart-breaking cases are given serious attention by the courts," Justice Chandrachud said.

CJI reiterated that no case is small. The Supreme Court treats every citizen equally and the aim is to support and deliver justice to the common man. "We are conscious of the fact that regardless of who is in power, common people have concerns and the judiciary is the vital element in the preservation of law," CJI added.

Delivering justice to the common man is an integral part of the overall fabric of the Constitution of India.

CJI also shared the motive behind the idea of meeting 150 district court judges during a conference in Gujarat's Kutch. He said "If a common citizen faces any problem, he or she first goes to a district court. Therefore, I thought it important to meet these judges. You see, when we strengthen the district-level courts we also strengthen the connection of the people with the judiciary."

Justice Chandrachud further added that he heard the district court's views and shared his views so that future policy-making can directly impact the lives of the common man through these judges. "The idea is to raise issues of marginalised people and women seeking justice and to provide them the necessary help."
