Chicago Centenarian Aims for Skydiving World Record

A 104-year-old woman from Chicago, Dorothy Hoffner, is hoping to be certified as the world's oldest skydiver after making a tandem jump in Illinois. The current record was set by a 103-year-old Swedish woman in May 2022.

The city of Ottawa was witness to an extraordinary feat on October 2nd, as a 104-year-old Chicago woman sought to be recognized as the oldest person ever to skydive. Dorothy Hoffner, leaving her walker behind, made a tandem jump in northern Illinois, demonstrating that age is no barrier when it comes to pursuing thrilling experiences.

Oldest Skydiver

Upon landing at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, located approximately 85 miles southwest of Chicago, Hoffner was greeted by cheers from the crowd. The current Guinness World Record for the oldest skydiver is held by Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson from Sweden who achieved this feat in May 2022 at the age of 103. However, Skydive Chicago is now working towards getting Hoffner’s daring jump certified as a new record by Guinness World Records.

Hoffner's Second Adventure

Interestingly enough, this was not Hoffner’s first experience with skydiving. She had originally taken up the sport when she was 100 years old. This time around though, she left her walker just short of boarding the plane – a Skyvan – and with some assistance climbed up the steps to join others waiting inside for their turn to dive.

"Let's go, let's go! Geronimo!" exclaimed an excited Hoffner once seated inside the aircraft. Her initial experience with skydiving involved being pushed out of the aircraft; however this time around things were different. Tethered securely to an instructor certified by US Parachute Association (USPA), Hoffner insisted on leading her own jump from an impressive height of approximately 13,500 feet or roughly 4,100 meters above ground level.

A Calm and Confident Jump

Despite what one might expect given her advanced age and the inherent risks associated with skydiving, Hoffner remained calm and confident as the aircraft ascended and its aft door opened. Her enthusiasm for the sport, coupled with her determination to break records, serves as a powerful reminder that age is indeed just a number.

In conclusion, Dorothy Hoffner’s story stands as an inspirational testament to human spirit and endurance. At 104 years old, she not only successfully completed a tandem skydive jump but also aims to set a new Guinness World Record. Her adventurous feat has undoubtedly challenged societal norms about aging and limitations. Whether or not Hoffner will be officially recognized by Guinness remains to be seen; regardless, her tale of courage and resilience will continue to inspire many across the globe.
