Chennai braces for more rain, schools remain closed

There seems to be no respite from rains for the people of Chennai. Weathermen have forecasted rains for Chennai and neighbouring areas on Monday.

    Chennai, Nov 6: There seems to be no respite from rains for the people of Chennai. Weathermen have forecasted rains for Chennai and neighbouring areas on Monday. Chennai received moderate to heavy rains early Monday morning.

    Going by the weather reports, local administrations have declared holiday for schools on Monday in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur. Schools in various parts of the state have been closed since last Tuesday.

    "#TamilNadu: Schools remain closed in Chennai,Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur today due to heavy rainfall in the region," tweeted ANI.

    According to weather reports, moderate to heavy spells are approaching many parts of Chennai.

    "Coastal Tamil Nadu has recorded very heavy showers on Sunday. Though Chennai witnessed light showers only," stated a report by skymetweather.com.

    "Nungambakkam observatory in Chennai has witnessed 13 mm of rainfall, Parangipettai 106 mm, Karaikal 57 mm, Cuddalore 42 mm and Puducherry 102 mm in the last 24 hours. Short spells of intense showers will continue over Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai.

    "Thereafter the intensity of rain will decrease as the trough of low as well as the cyclonic circulation will move further south away from the Tamil Nadu coast. After November 7 rain intensity will reduce significantly," added skymetweather.com.

    The last time Chennai received heavy rainfall was in December, 2015 when the entire city and various parts of the state were submerged in water. The massive floods of 2015 in Tamil Nadu and different parts of south India saw at least 500 people dead.

    This time, at least 12 people have died due to rain-related incidents in various parts of the state. As roads and residential areas remain waterlogged for days, traffic jams have become a regular affair in the city causing massive problems to the commuters.
