Charanjit Singh Channi Calls IAF Convoy Attack a 'Stunt' Linked to LS Polls
In a recent statement that has sparked controversy, Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi described the Poonch terror attack, which resulted in the death of an Indian Air Force (IAF) soldier and injuries to four others, as a political stunt by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at securing victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This comment from Channi, who is contesting as the Congress candidate for the Jalandhar parliamentary constituency, has led to widespread criticism from various quarters, including Union Minister Anurag Thakur and BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

During a response to inquiries about the assault on an IAF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, Channi stated, "Yeh stuntbaazi ho rahi hai, hamle nahi ho rahe" (These are all stunts, not attacks). He further alleged that such incidents are orchestrated as election strategies by the BJP. The attack in question occurred three weeks before polling in the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, raising suspicions of a deliberate act of violence.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur vehemently condemned Channi's remarks, questioning whether the Congress party intends to insult soldiers as a tactic to win elections. Thakur's demand for an apology from Channi was echoed by Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, both of whom expressed their disdain for Channi's comments on social media platforms.
Jakhar criticized Channi's statement as an insult to the nation and a belittlement of the valor of India's armed forces. He called for immediate public disassociation from Channi's remarks by the Congress and its allies. Similarly, Sirsa condemned the statement as disrespectful towards those who serve the nation, accusing the Congress of undermining the sacrifice of military personnel for electoral gains.
The incident that triggered this controversy involved a terrorist ambush on an IAF convoy in Poonch district, resulting in casualties among military personnel. Officials suspect that this attack was carried out by the same group responsible for a previous ambush in Bufliaz on December 21 last year, which left four soldiers dead and three injured.
The fallout from Channi's statement highlights the sensitive nature of national security issues and their impact on political discourse, especially in the context of upcoming elections. The demand for an apology from Channi by members of the BJP underscores the deep divisions between India's major political parties over how to address acts of terrorism and their implications for domestic politics.
