Heavy Rainfall Leads To Suspension Of Char Dham Yatra In Uttarakhand
Heavy rainfall predictions for 7 and 8 July in nine districts of Uttarakhand prompted the state government to suspend the Char Dham Yatra for days last Saturday. Pilgrims were advised to stay put and wait for better weather conditions. Waterlogging, landslides, and road blockages have also negatively impacted tourism in the region.

On Saturday evening, Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey announced that heavy rain was expected on 7 and 8 July in Garhwal districts. Pilgrims were urged not to proceed on their journey and to stay where they were on 7 July. The decision to resume the Yatra would depend on Monday's weather conditions.
Char Dham Yatra Suspended Amid Heavy Rainfall Warnings
Offline registration for pilgrims was halted on Sunday and Monday due to the Char Dham Yatra route passing through Garhwal districts. "The Yatra Administration made this decision for the safety of pilgrims," said Ashish Srivastava from the Char Dham Yatra administration. He appealed to pilgrims not to start their journey from Rishikesh on 7 July and to remain at their current locations until the weather improved.
On Monday morning, a brief improvement in weather allowed a few pilgrims to proceed with caution, but registration counters remained closed. However, heavy rainfall soon resumed in Rudraprayag, Pauri, and Chamoli areas, leading authorities to halt pilgrim movement entirely again. "The Badrinath highway is closed at many places again," Ashish added.
Tourism Takes a Hit as Rains Pour
The heavy rains have caused landslides, flooding, and blocked routes across Uttarakhand. This has severely affected the state's infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and communication networks. Consequently, tourist numbers have dropped significantly in popular destinations like Mussoorie, Nainital, and Rishikesh during what is usually a busy time of year.
Tour operators, hoteliers, and local businesses are feeling the impact of these adverse weather conditions. Sanjay Agarwal, president of Mussoorie Hotel Association, noted a 70 percent decline in bookings. He mentioned that apart from rains and landslides, other factors like schools reopening also contribute to low business during monsoon months. Sandeep Sahni from Uttarakhand Hotel Association added that cancellations and low occupancy rates are common setbacks during this season.
Adventure Activities Put on Hold
Uttarakhand is famous for adventure activities such as trekking, camping, river rafting, and paragliding. However, swollen rivers during monsoon have led authorities to suspend river rafting until September and close paragliding in Bhimtal area for the season. Treacherous trekking trails and risky conditions have also prompted officials to prioritize safety over adventure until weather conditions stabilize.
The adverse weather has not only disrupted pilgrimages but also significantly impacted tourism-related businesses across Uttarakhand. The state's natural beauty attracts many visitors annually; however, safety concerns during monsoon months often lead to cancellations and reduced tourist activity.
