BJP Claims New Delhi Chief Minister Will Not Change AAP's Character Amid Corruption Allegations

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday, asserting that changing the chief minister will not alter the party's nature. The BJP accused the Arvind Kejriwal-led party of a decade-long corruption in Delhi. They also targeted Atishi, AAP's chief minister-designate, alleging her parents signed a mercy plea for Afzal Guru, convicted for the Parliament attack.

BJP: New CM Wont Change AAPs Character

Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva stated, "Chehara badalane se AAP ka charitra nahi badalega," meaning changing the face does not change AAP's character. He insisted that regardless of who becomes chief minister, they must explain how they exploited Delhi's citizens over ten years. Sachdeva further claimed that corruption was rampant in every department under AAP's rule.

Security Concerns and Allegations

BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh expressed concerns over Atishi's appointment as Delhi's chief minister, citing national security risks. He highlighted that Atishi's parents had sought to prevent Afzal Guru's execution, linking this to potential threats to national security. Chugh described this decision as a significant misjudgment and injustice to Delhi residents.

Sachdeva echoed these sentiments, accusing Arvind Kejriwal of leading Delhi into chaos by nominating Atishi Marlena. He labelled the government as not only corrupt but also anti-national. Sachdeva emphasised that the people would eventually hold AAP accountable for its actions.

Corruption Accusations

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonwalla criticised Kejriwal for allegedly operating from jail and later becoming a chief minister on bail. He suggested that Atishi would serve as a proxy leader while Kejriwal remains the de-facto chief minister. Poonwalla alleged widespread corruption under Atishi's leadership in various sectors, including education and water management.

Chugh further attacked AAP's governance record, accusing them of corrupt practices and failing to protect Delhi citizens' interests. He urged voters to consider the risks posed by such leadership and reject those compromising national security.

AAP's Response

In response, AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh accused BJP of being India's largest anti-national party. He pointed out BJP's alliance with PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, which had called Afzal Guru a martyr. Singh defended AAP against BJP's allegations, highlighting their own questionable alliances.

Kejriwal, recently released on bail, announced his resignation from the chief minister post on Sunday. He stated he would only return if granted a certificate of honesty by the people. Kejriwal also called for assembly elections in November, ahead of the current term ending on February 23.

The ongoing political tension between BJP and AAP highlights deep-rooted issues concerning governance and accountability in Delhi. As both parties continue to exchange accusations, the focus remains on addressing corruption and ensuring national security.
