Chandigarh: Creator of Rock Garden-Nek Chand-passes away at 90
Chandigarh, June 12: The renowned creator of the famous Rock Garden-Nek Chand-passed away today at the age of 90. He suffered a cardiac arrest.

Awarded the Padma Shri in 1984, he was the creator one of the most-visited landmarks in the city-Rock Garden. It is famous for its sculptures created out of waste material.
Originally from Pakistan, he crossed the border during the 1947 partition and his family settled in Chandigarh. The city was getting a new design at that time and the architect was Swiss/French architect Le Corbusier.
This is when Chand found work as a road inspector for the Public Works Department in 1951. This is when he started designing statuettes from concrete scrap materials. The rest is history.
