Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has accused the Centre of inadequate support for the Upper Krishna project, citing legal obstacles from neighbouring states. He emphasised the state's commitment to development and substantial compensation for affected farmers.

Shivakumar, speaking at a public event in Vijayapura, highlighted the Congress government's commitment to prioritising projects under Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited. Since taking office, they have allocated substantial funds to these initiatives. "The Upper Krishna project Phase-3 will give us 80 TMC feet of water. We are putting pressure on the Centre to issue a Gazette notification, but they are not cooperating. The neighboring states are creating obstacles with court cases," he stated.

Compensation and Investments

The Deputy Chief Minister announced that Rs 3,700 crore had been sanctioned for Vijayapura district since his tenure began. He also revealed a significantly higher compensation package for farmers impacted by the project. Farmers will receive between Rs 30 lakh to Rs 40 lakh per acre, compared to the previous government's offer of Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh per acre. The total compensation will amount to Rs 70,000 crore.

Shivakumar addressed ongoing litigation issues, noting that nearly 29,000 cases remain unresolved. He warned against expecting higher compensation through legal means, stating that no government project could proceed if such compensations were mandated. "If you think that you would get a higher compensation in the court, it won't happen. No government project can be implemented if such higher compensations had to be given," he cautioned.

Development Initiatives and Renaming Efforts

Efforts are underway to shed Vijayapura's label as an arid district by attracting Rs 10 lakh crore in investments and boosting rural education through Karnataka Public Schools. Shivakumar also mentioned renaming bus stands in Vijayapura, Devara Hipparagi, Surapura, and Sindagi after notable historical figures. This move reflects the government's belief in equal opportunities and shared resources.

The state government remains focused on generating employment and improving living conditions in the region. By addressing these challenges and implementing strategic initiatives, they aim to foster growth and development across Karnataka.
