Centre Shows No Concern for Manipur Conflict, Says Congress Leader

Senior Congress leader and former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh has criticised the Centre for its lack of concern over the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. Speaking at a press conference, Singh emphasised that the opposition's intention was not to gain political advantage but to address the dire situation. He stated, "We and 10 other like-minded political parties have been trying to bring a solution."

State Government's Responsibility

Singh highlighted that maintaining law and order is a state responsibility, and it is the duty of the state government to protect life and property. He remarked, "People know whether the government is carrying out its duties." Singh accused the state machinery of failing completely in its responsibilities. He added that if the state government had performed its duties diligently, no political party would have criticised it.

Prime Minister's Role

Singh questioned who should be held accountable for the loss of lives and properties. He stressed that the people want the prime minister to view Manipuris as Indian citizens and take active steps to resolve the crisis. Singh pointed out, "The PM could stay overnight in neighbouring Assam for his election campaign but doesn't wish to come to Manipur where more than 200 people have been killed and 60,000 rendered homeless in the ethnic violence."

Background of Ethnic Violence

Ethnic violence has plagued Manipur since May last year, involving clashes between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kukis. The unrest has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of thousands. Singh's comments underscore the urgent need for intervention to restore peace in the region.

The former three-term chief minister reiterated that had the state government fulfilled its obligations, there would have been no need for criticism from any political party. He urged for immediate action to address the ongoing crisis and bring relief to those affected by the violence.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, with calls for both state and central governments to take decisive measures to end the violence and ensure safety for all citizens.
