Centre Declares June 25 To Be Observed As 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'
Centre has declared June 25 as "Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas" to commemorate the imposition of the Emergency by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government on June 25, 1975.
This period saw the suspension of most civil rights for over two years, resulting in widespread abuses and atrocities. As per the government, the declaration aims to honor those who suffered and resisted the abuse of power during the Emergency and to reaffirm the commitment of the people of India to prevent such abuses in the future.

Home Minister Amit Shah shared the government's notification on X, which stated: "A proclamation of Emergency was made on 25th June 1975, following which there was a gross abuse of power by the Government of the day and the people of India were subjected to excesses and atrocities."
On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced.
