Centre Starts Land Search For Manmohan Singh Memorial Amid Political Drama

The Centre has officially commenced the process of selecting a location for a memorial dedicated to the late former prime minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. His passing on December 28, 2024, prompted national tributes, with many highlighting his instrumental role in India's economic liberalization during the 1990s.

Manmohan Singh Memorial: Centre Starts Land Search

According to reports, officials from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) recently visited areas near the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial in Rashtriya Smriti Sthal to assess potential sites for the proposed memorial. The government has been actively engaging with Dr. Singh's family to discuss and finalize the location, considering multiple options. While no specific site has been confirmed yet, it’s expected that all decisions will be made in close consultation with the Singh family.

A trust will be established to oversee the memorial’s creation, and once the site is finalized, the land will be allotted accordingly. The government has also expressed its commitment to ensuring that the memorial is a fitting tribute to the former prime minister’s legacy.

Manmohan Singh Memorial: Political Dispute Erupts

The announcement of the memorial has also sparked a political controversy. A war of words erupted between Congress and BJP over the arrangements for Dr. Singh’s final rites. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, accused the BJP of disrespecting the former prime minister by conducting his last rites at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi. They argued that the location did not honour the dignity of his office or his legacy, particularly as he was the first Sikh prime minister of India.

In response, BJP leaders, including Union Minister JP Nadda, criticized the Congress for politicizing the situation, claiming that the party had shown insufficient respect for Dr. Singh during his tenure as prime minister. Nadda emphasized that such criticisms were inappropriate, especially after Congress failed to honour Singh properly during his life.

A Final Tribute to a Statesman

As the Centre moves forward with the memorial project, it remains to be seen how the political debate surrounding his funeral will evolve. Despite the discord, there is widespread acknowledgment of Dr. Singh’s contributions to the nation, and the memorial promises to be a testament to his legacy as a key architect of India’s economic transformation.
