Face Recognition CCTV Cameras Coming Soon to Central Railway Stations for Enhanced Passenger Safety
Central Railway, one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways, has announced plans to install a total of 6,122 Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) cameras at its 364 railway stations. Of these, 3,652 will be equipped with a face recognition system. The announcement was made in a press release on Tuesday.

The initiative is part of an agreement between the Railway Board and RailTel Corporation of India Ltd., a Mini Ratna (Category-I) Public Sector Undertaking under Ministry of Railways. The move aims to enhance passenger safety and monitor compliance with railway rules across all Central Railway stations including those on the Mumbai Suburban Network.
Advanced Surveillance for Enhanced Security
The use of advanced technology like facial recognition systems will not only help recognize known criminals whose faces are stored in their database but also manage crowded areas effectively. Upon recognizing such individuals, the system instantly alerts the administration as they enter a station. Furthermore, these cameras can identify various parts of a face which provides detailed insights into crowd management and criminal identification.
Exemptions from Installation
However, certain major stations such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Kurla, Thane, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Kalyan have been exempted from this installation process. This is due to them already being equipped with Integrated Security Systems (ISS), which include surveillance cameras among other security features.
A Step Towards Comprehensive Surveillance
The introduction of CCTV cameras fitted with facial recognition systems marks an important step towards comprehensive surveillance within Indian railways' premises. In addition to deterring lawbreakers by maintaining vigilant eye over suspicious activities or persons in real-time; it will also serve as evidence during investigations if any crime occurs at these locations.
Moreover, the video analytics and management system will aid in controlling crime rates. As per the press release, "Cameras with face recognition systems, video analytics, video management system will enhance passenger safety, control crime, deter law abusers and monitor compliance with railway rules."
In conclusion, this initiative by Central Railway is a significant move towards leveraging advanced technology for enhancing security measures within its premises. It not only ensures passenger safety but also aids in maintaining law and order across all its stations. The installation of CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition systems provides a robust surveillance mechanism that can effectively manage crowds while identifying known criminals instantaneously.
