Central Railway Celebrates 100 Years of Electrification with Exhibition and Walkathon Events

Central Railway celebrated a century of train electrification with various events, including an exhibition and a walkathon. This significant journey began on February 3, 1925, when the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, now Central Railway, launched the first electric train between Bombay VT (now CSMT) and Kurla Harbour, spanning 16 kilometres. This milestone followed nearly 72 years after India's inaugural train journey from Boribandar (now CSMT) to Thane on April 16, 1853.

Central Railway Marks Century of Electrification

The transition to the 1500V DC system marked a shift from steam-powered locomotives to electric traction, setting the stage for modernisation. Central Railway achieved full electrification of its broad gauge network in February 2023, continuing its push towards sustainability, according to an official release. The centenary celebrations included an exhibition inaugurated by General Manager Dharam Veer Meena at CSMT, showcasing the evolution of electric traction.

Electrification Journey Highlighted

During a special function marking the centenary of electrification, Meena described the milestone as a blend of history and progress. He reiterated the railway's dedication to innovation, service enhancements, and technological advancements. The exhibition features display boards, miniature working models, and other exhibits that highlight technological advancements in railway electrification.

The exhibition is located at CSMT's platform 7-8 and is open for public viewing. A walkathon with over 250 participants retraced Indian Railways' electrification journey, according to CR Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila. The celebrations also included a short film on railway electrification and a detailed presentation by Chief Electrical Engineer Construction Vineet Kumar.

This historic shift from steam to electric trains has been crucial in modernising India's railways. The complete electrification of Central Railway's broad gauge network underscores its commitment to sustainable development. As the railway continues to innovate and improve services, it remains focused on technological progress.
