Central Govt Delegation Meets Shompen Tribe in Great Nicobar

In a significant outreach to the indigenous communities of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, top central government officials, including Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Dr. Pramod Kumar Mishra and Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, engaged in a meaningful dialogue with representatives of the Shompen tribe, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG). The meeting took place at Great Nicobar on Thursday, marking a notable effort to understand the tribe's history, tradition, and culture directly from its members.

Govt Meets Shompen Tribe

The Shompen tribe, known for residing in dense forests, interacted with the officials with the assistance of local administration and an interpreter. They welcomed the delegation with their traditional greeting 'Inapte', which translates to 'namaskar' in the Shompen language, at the forest camp of Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar. The interaction was enriched with cultural exchanges, including a presentation on PVTGs by Chief Secretary Keshav Chandra and a traditional Nicobarese dance performance by representatives of the Great Nicobarese tribes.

During the visit, Dr. Mishra inquired about healthcare facilities available to the tribe. He learned that medical emergencies are managed with the support of doctors/pharmacists and the Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti (AAJVS), an autonomous society dedicated to the welfare of PVTGs in the archipelago. The peaceful coexistence between the Shompen and Great Nicobarese tribes was also highlighted, alongside administrative efforts to integrate them into democratic processes, evidenced by seven Shompen individuals voting in the recent Lok Sabha polls for the first time.

The delegation's visit extended beyond cultural immersion to include strategic and developmental aspects. They inspected key locations such as a watchtower and coastal areas relevant to the Rs 75,000 Cr Great Nicobar Project. This ambitious initiative aims to establish an international container trans-shipment terminal, airport, power plant, and green-field township at Campbell Bay. A visit to INS Baaz underscored the strategic importance of Campbell Bay's location overlooking critical maritime routes like the Strait of Malacca.

On Friday, the PMO officials are scheduled to visit Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island to discuss plans for a proposed national memorial. In preparation for this visit, all tourist boats will be restricted from accessing Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island after 2 PM on May 3.

This engagement underscores the government's commitment to understanding and addressing the needs of India's indigenous populations while balancing developmental objectives with cultural preservation. The insights gained from these interactions are expected to inform future policies and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of PVTGs in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
