West Bengal Elections to Receive Boost with 100 More Central Force Companies

In a significant move to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission has announced the deployment of additional central forces. A total of 100 more companies of central forces are set to arrive in the state next week, augmenting the security measures for the first phase of polling scheduled on April 19. This decision brings the total number of companies to be deployed in this phase to 277, as confirmed by an official on Saturday.

Boost in Security for Bengal Polls

Three constituencies in North Bengal, namely Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduars, are poised for election in this initial phase. Currently, 177 companies of central forces have been stationed across various districts in West Bengal to maintain order and facilitate a peaceful election process. The additional 100 companies expected by Wednesday will bolster the security framework significantly.

Despite these arrangements, there is an expressed need for more personnel to cover all polling booths comprehensively. While there has been no confirmation regarding the acquisition of additional forces, it has been suggested that state police may complement the central forces during the first phase of voting. Each company in the central armed police forces consists of approximately 100 personnel, meaning a total deployment of around 27,700 personnel for the initial phase.

To further enhance transparency and security, webcasting will be implemented across all polling booths. This technological intervention aims to ensure fair and free elections by allowing real-time monitoring of the electoral process.

Looking ahead to the second phase of polling on April 26, a total of 47 candidates have already filed their nomination papers for three Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. These constituencies include Darjeeling, Raiganj, and Balurghat. The breakdown of nominations is as follows: Darjeeling has seen 14 candidates submit their papers, Raiganj 20, and Balurghat 13. Candidates have until April 8 to withdraw their nominations.

This strategic deployment of central forces and the implementation of webcasting at polling booths underscore the Election Commission's commitment to conducting a secure and transparent electoral process in West Bengal. As preparations continue, all eyes are on these measures to facilitate a smooth and peaceful election.
