CBSE Issues Notice On Class X And XII Board Exam Eligibility: Find Out The Mandatory Attendance Requirements

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued an official notice to all Principals and Heads of Schools affiliated with the Board, reminding them of the importance of student attendance for the upcoming Class X and XII board examinations. Schools are instructed to strictly follow Rules 13 and 14 of the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws concerning student attendance.

In the notice, the CBSE highlighted the vital role schools play beyond just academic learning. "It is well understood that schools are not just centres for academic learning but play a critical role in the overall development of students. Along with imparting subject knowledge, schools facilitate extracurricular activities, peer learning, character building, values inculcation, teamwork, collaboration, respecting diversity, inclusion, and many more. Therefore, the regular attendance of students in the school is vital to ensuring their holistic development," the notice stated.

According to CBSE regulations, students must maintain a minimum attendance of 75 per cent to be eligible to sit for the Board examinations. However, the Board does offer a 25 per cent relaxation in special cases, such as medical emergencies, participation in national or international sports events, and other serious reasons, provided that students submit the necessary documentation to justify their absence.

The CBSE has directed schools to inform both students and parents about these attendance requirements and the potential consequences of not meeting them. The notice emphasizes that if students are found to be absent without proper leave records during sudden inspections by CBSE officials, it will be assumed they are not attending school regularly. In such cases, the Board will not permit these students to sit for their Board examinations.

Furthermore, the CBSE has clarified that no changes to attendance records will be allowed once a school submits cases of attendance shortages to the Board. The attendance will be calculated as of January 1 of the academic session.

In addition to these directives, the CBSE has provided Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for condoning cases of attendance shortages and has included a Proforma that schools can use when submitting cases for condonation.

This notice serves as a crucial reminder for schools to monitor and promote regular attendance, ensuring students are adequately prepared for their board examinations.
