CBI Detains RG Kar Hospital's Former Principal and Tala Police OC for Investigation

A local court on Sunday remanded former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal to CBI custody until September 17, an officer reported. The central agency presented both individuals in court concerning the rape-murder of a doctor at the state-run hospital.

Charges and Arrests

The CBI had arrested Mondal on Saturday evening, adding charges of evidence tampering against Ghosh, who is already in judicial custody for a corruption case linked to RG Kar hospital. Mondal faces accusations of delaying the FIR registration, tampering with evidence, and other related offences, according to the officer.

The CBI claimed in court that there might be a larger conspiracy and that both Ghosh and Mondal played significant roles in the crime. They were charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for disobeying lawful orders as public servants, tampering with evidence, and criminal conspiracy.

Incident Details

The body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital on August 9. To date, three individuals have been arrested in connection with this case. The CBI stated that police should have treated it as a suo motu case from the beginning due to its nature as a rape-murder case.

Mondal was informed about the doctor's death around 10 am on August 9, but the FIR was lodged after 11 pm. The duo allegedly tried to downplay the incident and shield the crime, according to court statements. The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital falls under Tala PS jurisdiction.

CBI's Investigation

The police officer was detained after failing to provide satisfactory answers during questioning by CBI officers on Saturday. The agency mentioned that both Ghosh and Mondal were in contact, with Ghosh instructing Mondal on handling the rape-murder case.

The CBI arrested Ghosh on September 2 for financial irregularities at the hospital. "We have got their custody for three days till September 17. Now, both will be questioned together. The duo played vital roles in the RG Kar case," an officer stated.

The investigation continues as authorities seek to uncover more details about the alleged conspiracy and involvement of other individuals in this heinous crime.
