CBI Arrests Fugitive Satish Kumar Anand After 40 Years in Rs 5.69 Lakh Bank Fraud Case

A fugitive linked to a bank fraud case was apprehended by the CBI after evading capture for over four decades, officials reported. Satish Kumar Anand, once a manager at Ashok Trading in Hapur, and Ashok Kumar, the company's owner, were found guilty in 1985 of defrauding the Bank of India of Rs 5.69 lakh.

CBI Arrests Fugitive in Bank Fraud Case

The fraud involved Anand and Kumar conspiring with a branch manager in 1977 to secure a loan using fake documents. The loan was approved based on a fabricated receipt and forged bills that falsely indicated a consignment dispatch. This led to the bank suffering a wrongful loss of Rs 5.69 lakh, which Anand allegedly misappropriated.

CBI's Long Pursuit

The CBI registered the case in 1978 and spent seven years investigating and prosecuting it. This effort resulted in Anand and Kumar's conviction by a Special Court in Dehradun in 1985. However, the branch manager involved was acquitted of all charges.

Anand received a five-year rigorous imprisonment sentence but managed to evade authorities for nearly 40 years. After his conviction, he absconded, leading the court of special judge of CBI, anti-corruption, Dehradun, to declare him a proclaimed offender on November 30, 2009.

Arrest and Judicial Proceedings

Now in his seventies, Anand was arrested in North Delhi's Rohini area. He was then taken to Dehradun in Uttarakhand and presented before a Special Court, where he was remanded to judicial custody. Officials noted that Anand avoided arrest by frequently changing locations and staying elusive at known addresses in New Delhi and Hapur.

To track him down, the CBI relied on local informants from areas where Anand had previously resided. A significant lead emerged when investigators traced a mobile number registered under Anand's son's name. Using this subscriber information, they set up surveillance around the associated address.

End of an Era

This strategic move led to Anand's discovery in Delhi's Rohini area, effectively ending his 40-year evasion from justice. The successful capture marks the conclusion of an extraordinary saga of prolonged abscondence.
