Four Arrested by CBI in Probe into Missing Manipuri Students Case
Phijam Hemanjit and Hijam Linthoingambi, two students from Manipur went missing on July 6. Images allegedly showing their bodies led to violent student-led protests. In response, the CBI arrested four people involved in the case, who are now being taken to Guwahati for trial.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested four individuals on Sunday in relation to the disappearance and suspected murder of two Manipuri students. The arrests mark a significant development in an investigation that has gripped the nation, sparked violent protests, and raised serious questions about law enforcement's handling of missing persons cases.
Disappearance and Suspected Murder

Phijam Hemanjit, 20, and Hijam Linthoingambi, a 17-year-old girl, vanished without a trace on July 6. On September 25, images allegedly depicting their bodies emerged online. This revelation ignited widespread outrage and led to numerous demonstrations primarily led by students demanding justice for the deceased.
Arrests Made
In collaboration with the Manipur Police and central forces, the CBI apprehended two men – Paominlun Haokip and Smalsawm Haokip – along with two women – Lhingneichong Baitekuki and Tinneilhing Henthang. These arrests are connected to cases filed on August 23 regarding this incident. The accused have been transported to Guwahati as per officials' reports.
Court Proceedings
The detained suspects will be presented before a competent court in Guwahati following Supreme Court orders. During transit from Imphal to Guwahati, two children who were accompanying the accused were taken into custody for their welfare. They have been entrusted under the care of Kamrup metro district's child protection officer as disclosed by a CBI spokesperson.
Prior Investigations
Prior to these developments, based on complaints lodged by parents of both victims', initial investigations related to these missing students had been registered with Imphal Police as well as Lamphel Police Station. However, the cases were subsequently transferred to the CBI due to mounting pressure and demands for a more thorough investigation.
In conclusion, this case has highlighted the urgent need for robust and efficient mechanisms in dealing with missing persons' cases. The arrest of these four individuals is a significant step towards justice for Phijam Hemanjit and Hijam Linthoingambi. As investigations continue, it is hoped that there will be complete transparency from law enforcement agencies involved in order to ensure public trust is maintained. It also underlines the importance of child protection services in such scenarios where minors are indirectly affected by criminal proceedings.
