CBI Detains Four for Trafficking Indians to Russia-Ukraine Conflict Zone
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made significant arrests in connection with a human trafficking network that allegedly sent Indian nationals to the Russia-Ukraine war zone. Among those arrested are a contractual translator working for the Russian Defence Ministry and three others, highlighting the network's reach and the grave implications for those ensnared by it.

On Tuesday, officials disclosed the arrest of two recruiters, Arun and Yesudas Junior alias Priyan, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Earlier, on April 24, Nijil Jobi Bensam, a contractual employee with the Russian Defence Ministry, and Anthony Michael Elangovan from Mumbai were taken into custody. Both Bensam and Elangovan are currently in judicial custody.
Bensam's role was crucial within the operation, serving as a translator for the Russian Defence Ministry and facilitating the recruitment of Indian nationals for the Russian Army. Elangovan was implicated in assisting co-accused Faisal Baba and others in Russia by managing visa processing in Chennai and arranging air travel for the victims to Russia.
The CBI's investigation has unveiled a major racket involving travel agents who deceived Indian youths with promises of opportunities in Russia, only to thrust them into the conflict zones of the Russia-Ukraine war after confiscating their passports. The agency's FIR lists 17 visa consultancy firms across India, implicating their owners and agents in this nefarious scheme.
These individuals face charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to criminal conspiracy, cheating, and human trafficking. The accused allegedly trafficked Indian nationals under the guise of employment opportunities with the Russian army or as security guards and helpers. Moreover, students were misled into enrolling in dubious private universities in Russia with the promise of discounted fees and visa extensions, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation by local agents.
Upon arrival in Russia, these individuals had their passports seized and were coerced into joining armed forces after receiving combat training. The CBI has identified 35 instances where young Indians were lured to Russia with false promises of lucrative employment through social media and local agents. These trafficked individuals were then trained for combat roles and deployed at front bases in the Russia-Ukraine War Zone against their will, exposing them to severe risks and injuries.
This case sheds light on the dark underbelly of human trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable individuals seeking better opportunities abroad. The ongoing investigation may lead to further arrests as authorities work to dismantle this operation and provide justice for its victims.
