      The Cauvery waters verdict delivered today by a three judge Bench of the Supreme Court of India. It is a crucial day for the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as a lot would depend on this verdict.

      The verdict was pronounced by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, Justices Amitava Roy and Khanwilkar. The Bench had reserved its verdict after a marathon hearing on September 20, 2017. The court had in January said that it would deliver within a month its verdict on the decades old Cauvery water dispute between riparian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, saying enough confusion has been created on it for over two decades.

      While both sides would hope for a favourable verdict, the atmosphere is tense in both the states. Security is at an unprecedented high at the KRS dam and Mandya in Karnataka which forms the Cauvery basin.

      Counsel for Tamil Nadu Navneeth Krishnan said that they are disappointed with the judgment but will take 'appropriate steps' after studying the verdict. "We will respect the law and the government is definitely capable of handling the situation. The reduction in allocation, though, is disappointing, he said.
