Election Squad Seizes Over £72,000 in Cash from Car in Mumbai's Ghatkopar

In a significant operation in Mumbai's Ghatkopar suburb, a surveillance squad seized over Rs 72 lakh in cash from a car, just days following the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll schedule. The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday night, led to the detention of two individuals, one of whom identified himself as a chartered accountant (CA). The Pantnagar police station disclosed that the seized funds were linked to a Navi Mumbai-based realty developer. The Income Tax (I-T) department has since been engaged for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Acting on intelligence received by the district election cell's static surveillance squad, authorities executed a well-coordinated trap. A vehicle was stopped for inspection outside Nilyog Mall in Ghatkopar East, leading to the discovery of Rs 72,39,675 in cash. The occupants of the car, identified as Dilip Velji Nathani, aged 52, and Atul Velji Nath, aged 54, were detained for questioning. During the interrogation, they revealed that the cash was provided by a builder based in Navi Mumbai. Dilip Nathani presented himself as an I-T practitioner, while Atul Nath claimed his profession as a CA.

Investigation Underway

The authorities have taken possession of both the cash and the vehicle involved in this incident. The official stated that further action would be determined following the conclusion of the investigation.
