CAQM Reinstates GRAP 4 Restrictions In Delhi-NCR Due To Severe Air Quality Crisis

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reinstated GRAP 4 restrictions in Delhi-NCR due to worsening air quality. This decision follows the earlier imposition of GRAP III measures. The fourth stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for winters includes prohibiting all construction and demolition activities, including public projects like highways and flyovers, and restricting trucks carrying non-essential goods from entering Delhi.

Delhi's air quality index, which was 379 at 4 pm, exceeded 400 by 10 pm. This spike was due to calm winds and an inversion layer affecting vertical mixing height. On December 5, the Supreme Court permitted CAQM to ease GRAP-4 restrictions to stage 2 as AQI levels improved in the region.

Impact of Severe Air Pollution

The reintroduction of GRAP 4 restrictions highlights the severity of Delhi's air pollution crisis. The measures aim to curb pollution sources during winter when conditions worsen. The ban on construction and demolition is crucial as these activities significantly contribute to dust and particulate matter in the air.

Truck entry restrictions are also vital in reducing emissions from vehicles that carry non-essential goods. These vehicles contribute heavily to air pollution, especially when traffic congestion increases emissions further.

Efforts to Manage Air Quality

The CAQM's decision reflects ongoing efforts to manage air quality in Delhi-NCR effectively. By implementing GRAP stages based on pollution levels, authorities aim to mitigate health risks associated with poor air quality. These measures are part of a broader strategy to improve living conditions in one of India's most polluted regions.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain due to factors like weather conditions that exacerbate pollution levels. Authorities must continuously adapt strategies to address these challenges effectively.

The situation underscores the need for long-term solutions beyond temporary restrictions. Sustainable practices and policies are essential for improving air quality permanently and ensuring public health safety.
