Cabinet nod to extend special fast-track courts for sexual offences
The Union Cabinet has given its nod to extend by three years the continuation of the special fast-track courts that seek to deliver swift justice in cases involving sexual offences.
In a significant move to ensure swift justice in cases involving sexual offences, the Union Cabinet has approved the extension of special fast-track courts (FTSCs) by three years. This decision comes after the passage of the Criminal Law Amendment Act in 2018 in response to the horrific Nirbhaya gangrape case in Delhi.

Establishment of FTSCs
In the aftermath of the Nirbhaya case, the Centre had taken the initiative to set up 1,023 FTSCs, including 389 exclusively dedicated to handling cases related to violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, across 31 states and union territories. However, despite the Centre's efforts, only 754 of the 1,023 courts became operational.
Extension of Scheme
Although the initial scheme concluded on March 31 this year, the law ministry sought permission to ensure continued funding for the operational courts. On Tuesday, the cabinet approved the extension of the scheme for an additional three years. While official confirmation is awaited, it is anticipated that the extension will cover 790 FTSCs, instead of the original 1,023 courts.
Court Functionality and Expenditure
Each FTSC is designed to handle between 65 and 165 cases annually. To facilitate their operations, each court is allocated an annual budget of Rs 75 lakh and配备one judicial officer and seven support staff.
Significance of Extension
The extension of FTSCs is a crucial step in the government's ongoing efforts to combat sexual offences and deliver speedy justice to victims. These courts play a vital role in addressing the backlog of cases and ensuring timely trials, thereby instilling confidence in the justice system.
The extension of special fast-track courts for sexual offences is a positive development that will contribute to the effective prosecution of such crimes. By providing dedicated resources and streamlining the judicial process, these courts can help bring justice to victims and deter potential offenders. The government's commitment to supporting these courts reflects its resolve to address the issue of sexual violence and create a safer environment for women and children.
