Budget 2024: Government To Focus On 5 Key Social Sections

The pre-election budget, spearheaded by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is poised to center around welfare schemes for five key sections of society which would include women, the poor, youth, farmers, and tribals. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) aims for a third term in office, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to inclusive growth.

Consequently, enhancements are anticipated in allocations for existing schemes targeting these societal segments, while the possibility of introducing new schemes is being considered, as indicated by two individuals familiar with government discussions. "It is expected that schemes designed for these sections of society will be given emphasis in the budget. For instance, special attention will be directed towards education and skill development, addressing the aspirations of the youth," remarked one of the two individuals, according to Hindustan Times

Union Budget 2024- Welfare schemes for 5 key sections

With a budget allocation of over ₹1.12 lakh crore for the 2023-24 fiscal year, the two departments managing school education and literacy, as well as higher education, are highlighted by the Centre. Emphasizing women's welfare, a key focus in Sitharaman's budget speech on February 1, aligns with Modi's vision of women-led development. The recently held assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh underscored the significance of women voters, with both Congress and BJP offering schemes for women, reported HT.

In 2023-24, the ministry of tribal development, responsible for implementing tribal welfare schemes, witnessed a significant increase in allocation. This trend is expected to persist in 2024-25, particularly for the Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) program, providing free education to scheduled tribe children from classes six to eleven in a residential setting. The government's commitment to tribal welfare is evident in initiatives like the Vikasit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.as per the HT's report.

Further, farmers are anticipated to benefit from a potential 33% increase in social transfers under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. With the scheme allocating ₹60,000 crore in 2023-24, a proportional increase is expected in the upcoming fiscal year. While exact budgetary allocations are in progress, this strategic approach aligns with the government's focus on inclusive development and class-centric politics, fostering a connection with diverse segments of society.
