BSF Thwarts Major Infiltration Bid by Bangladeshis in West Bengal

The Border Security Force (BSF) announced on Wednesday that it had successfully prevented a significant infiltration attempt by a large group of Bangladeshi nationals along the International Border (IB) in West Bengal. This incident occurred amid heightened alert due to unrest in Bangladesh.

BSF Stops Bangladesh Infiltration Bid

Officials reported that approximately 120-140 Bangladeshi citizens tried to cross into India from various locations in the eastern state. The BSF has been on high alert since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in Dhaka earlier this week.

High Alert and Coordinated Efforts

The North Bengal Frontier of the BSF issued a statement to dispel rumours and clarify that there was no mass movement of the minority population from Bangladesh towards India. The individuals gathered near the border were primarily driven by fears of local unrest.

A spokesperson for the frontier, headquartered in Kadamtala, Darjeeling, stated, "The BSF, in coordination with the BGB and Bangladeshi civil authorities, has reassured these individuals of their safety and encouraged them to return to their homes."

According to the statement, BSF personnel displayed exceptional vigilance and proactive measures. They swiftly responded to these situations, ensuring border security and the safety of the gathered Bangladeshi nationals.

Specific Incidents and Responses

In one sector, BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), along with local civil authorities, sent back 35 Bangladeshi civilians to their homes. Additional forces have been deployed by BSF to manage the situation effectively.

In another sector, a group of Bangladeshi villagers approached the IB, causing a brief commotion. However, BSF personnel promptly engaged with the group, resolving the situation peacefully without any adverse incidents. The villagers returned home, and BSF remains on high alert.

The North Bengal Frontier also mentioned another significant infiltration attempt thwarted when a large Bangladeshi crowd was observed near the border. BSF personnel quickly mobilised and, with BGB's cooperation, dispersed the crowd, preventing any border violations.

Border Security Measures

The North Bengal Frontier of the BSF guards a 932.39 km section of the total 4,096-km-long India-Bangladesh international border. This section covers districts like Uttar Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar in West Bengal.

The Bangladeshi nationals were observed gathering near the IB around noon in two sectors due to fears of attacks by protestors in Bangladesh. The BSF's swift action ensured that these gatherings did not escalate into more significant issues.

The force's proactive measures have been crucial in maintaining peace and security along this sensitive border area. The coordinated efforts with BGB and local authorities have been instrumental in managing these situations effectively.

The BSF continues to monitor the situation closely and remains prepared for any further attempts at infiltration or unrest along the border. Their vigilance ensures that both sides of the border remain secure during these turbulent times.
