Breaking their backs: NIA seized Rs 36 crore demonetised currency in Kashmir
NIA officials say that a large chunk of the money was brought into the Valley in the past two years.
The National Investigation Agency has seized a whopping Rs 36 crore in demonetised currency while probing the Kashmir terror funding case. The money was seized from various quarters.
The demonetised currency worth Rs Rs 36,34,78,500 was seized over a period of time. Nine persons have been arrested in connection with this case.
NIA officials say that a large chunk of the money was brought into the Valley in the past two years. Most of the money came in ahead of the death of Burhan Wani as the separatists and terrorists were planning a major unrest. The death of Wani only became a trigger for the unrest.
The money was pumped in through various channels including hawala. Money was raised through illegal cross border trade, donations, ATM robberies and also through businessmen abroad. The money was stashed with several agents who would then release it ahead of an unrest being planned, officials also said.
