Uttar Pradesh Government Highlights Boatmen's Economic Gains from Maha Kumbh Event

The Uttar Pradesh government has defended its claim about the earnings of boatmen during the Maha Kumbh, following opposition parties' challenges. The state highlighted that boatmen were significant beneficiaries of the 45-day event. A press release stated that the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj offered substantial economic benefits to those at the lower end of the social spectrum.

Boatmen Benefit from Maha Kumbh Earnings

More than 1.5 crore devotees used boats to take a holy dip in the Triveni, according to Pappu Lal Nishad, president of the Prayagraj Navik Sangh. The statement noted that over 4,500 boats operated continuously during the event, each requiring at least three boatmen. Consequently, more than 13,000 boatmen earned between Rs 8-9 lakh each.

Economic Impact on Boatmen

The earnings from the Maha Kumbh have encouraged many boatmen to consider starting new ventures. Sanjeet Kumar Nishad shared how he managed to finance his two daughters' weddings with his earnings from the event. Similarly, Balwant Nishad, who lacked a proper home for three decades, now plans to build a house and buy a new boat with his income.

The Yogi Adityanath government also received praise for providing skill training to service providers during the Kumbh. Over 1,000 boatmen were trained in various skills such as disaster management and digital payments, which promoted financial independence in the area.

Opposition's Concerns

Opposition parties have questioned the state's claim that a boatman named Pintu Mahara earned Rs 30 crore with his fleet of 130 boats during the event. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav expressed skepticism on X, stating, "The truth of this news should be investigated." He questioned how much GST was collected if such earnings were true.

Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai also raised doubts about one family's ability to accumulate such wealth from ferrying devotees during the 45-day event. Rai questioned whether GST and other taxes were paid on this income, which was disclosed by the chief minister in the Assembly.

Event's Scale and Revenue Questions

The Maha Kumbh, held from January 13 to February 26, attracted an estimated 65 crore devotees according to state figures. Rai further argued that if the reported income is accurate, it suggests devotees were overcharged since such profits couldn't have been achieved at government-set rates.

The state government's stance remains firm despite these challenges. It continues to emphasize the economic relief provided by the Maha Kumbh to those involved in its operations.
