BMC Election 2017: 41.32 % voting recorded in Mumbai till 3:30 PM

Mumbai, Feb 21: The voting for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation begins on Tuesday for 227 municipal wards in which 2,275 candidates are in the fray. The civic body is fully prepared to hold the election across 227 electoral wards through 7,304 polling booths at 1,582 places. Apart from the civic bodies, the second phase of polling for 11 zilla parishads and 118 panchayat samitis will also be conducted on Tuesday.

BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Paresh Rawal and HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh also cast their vote.

At the polling booth in Nagpur at Bharat Mahila Vidyalaya, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagawat turned up for an early vote.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is expecting at least 55 per cent voter turnout in elections and has appointed one person per 200 voters to ensure they exercise their franchise.

Out of 91.8 lakh registered voters, 50 lakh are male, 49 lakh female and 381 transgenders.

Counting of the votes would take place on Thursday.

BJP, which ruled six of the municipal corporations in alliance with Shiv Sena, decided to go alone in upcoming elections. The voting percentage in the BMC polls held in 2007 and 2012 stood at 42% and 45% respectively.

The districts going to polls in the second phase are Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Pune, Solapur, Nashik, Amravati and Gadchiroli. Elections are being held in 118 panchayat samitis in these districts.

The 10 municipal corporations include Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur.
