Election Update: BJP's Vote Share Drops as Congress and SP Make Gains

The latest data from the Election Commission reveals a shift in the political landscape of India, as observed in the recent polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) experienced a slight decrease in its vote share, while the Congress and the Samajwadi Party saw an increase in their electoral support, diverging from the trends of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

BJP Down, Congress & SP Up in Votes

Despite contesting more seats than in the previous election, the BJP's national vote share fell to 36.57 per cent, marking a decrease of approximately 0.73 percentage points. Conversely, the Congress party witnessed a significant rise in its vote share, climbing by 1.74 percentage points to reach 21.20 per cent. This increase not only enhanced its vote share from 19.46 per cent in 2019 but also positively impacted its seat tally.

The INDIA bloc, with Congress at its forefront, is poised to secure 99 seats, nearly doubling its count from the last election. This surge is particularly notable in key north Indian states such as Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, the Congress's ally, the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party, almost doubled its vote share to 4.59 per cent from a previous 2.55 per cent.

Other parties have also seen shifts in their electoral support. The Janata Dal United experienced a slight decrease in vote share, dropping to 1.25 per cent from 1.45 per cent in 2019. The Trinamool Congress of West Bengal improved its standing slightly, increasing its vote share to 4.37 per cent from 4.06 per cent.

However, not all parties enjoyed gains this election cycle. The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP), led by Mayawati, saw its vote share decrease by 1.58 percentage points to 2.04 per cent. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on the other hand, increased its vote share from 0.44 per cent in 2019 to 1.11 per cent this time.

In terms of regional parties in southern India, the DMK witnessed a decrease in vote share from 2.34 per cent to 1.82 per cent. The BJP's ally in Andhra Pradesh, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), saw a slight reduction in vote share to 1.98 per cent from an earlier 2.04 per cent. Similarly, the YSR Congress party's vote share decreased to 2.06 per cent from 2.53 per cent.

This shift in voter preference across various states and parties indicates a dynamic political environment leading up to and during these elections. While some parties have managed to increase their electoral base, others have faced setbacks, reflecting the changing sentiments and priorities of the Indian electorate.
