Nandigram Sees BJP Supporters Lock TMC Office Over Alleged 'Traitor' Remark
In a recent turn of events in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district, political tensions flared as BJP supporters took a bold step by locking the Trinamool Congress (TMC) office at Nandigram. This action came as a protest against an alleged derogatory remark made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seemingly aimed at BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and his family. The incident unfolded on Sunday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing political rivalry between the two parties.

The lock placed by BJP supporters was later removed by TMC supporters, who were led by the party's Tamluk Lok Sabha candidate, Debangshu Bhattacharya. This group managed to clear the area, restoring access to the office. The controversy centers around comments purportedly made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a meeting in north Bengal on Friday. According to BJP leader Pralay Pal, Banerjee referred to Nandigram MLA and leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari, along with his family, as "traitors of Kanthi" in Purba Medinipur.
"The CM insulted our leader Adhikari and the people of the place. We blocked the road and locked the TMC office in protest against such distasteful comments by a senior leader of the TMC," Pal stated, expressing the indignation felt by BJP supporters over the alleged remarks.
On the other side of the dispute, Debangshu Bhattacharya countered the BJP's claims by suggesting that the Chief Minister's comments were widely understood and pointed to Adhikari's defection from TMC to BJP as a move to avoid scrutiny from enforcement agencies. Bhattacharya emphasized that the CM and TMC hold great respect for the residents of Purba Medinipur and accused the BJP of spreading falsehoods about the CM's comments.
Local TMC leader Paritosh Jana highlighted that the party office has been a fixture in the area for over 14 years, criticizing the BJP for its forceful actions. Meanwhile, a police official reported that despite the protests, the situation in Nandigram remained under control with no clashes occurring between members of the two parties.
This incident underscores the intense political rivalry in West Bengal, particularly in regions like Nandigram that have been historical hotbeds of political activity. As both parties stand their ground, the local community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that maintains peace and political integrity in their region.
