Harish Rawat Critiques BJP for Undermining Indira Gandhi's Contributions to India

Harish Rawat has accused the BJP of diminishing Indira Gandhi's legacy for political gain. He emphasised the importance of respecting historical figures and highlighted her significant contributions to India's development and national pride.

Harish Rawat, a Congress leader, criticised the BJP on Friday for allegedly undermining Indira Gandhi's sacrifice for political purposes. He emphasised that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi each made significant contributions to India's history. Rawat stated that comparing these historical figures diminishes the nation's respect.

Rawat highlighted Sardar Patel's pivotal role in unifying Indian states and, alongside Nehru, in establishing the foundation of India's Constitution. He also acknowledged Indira Gandhi's leadership during the Green, White, and Blue Revolutions, which steered India towards self-reliance.

Indira Gandhi's Legacy and Sacrifice

Indira Gandhi's leadership was instrumental during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Rawat mentioned her refusal to heed US President Richard Nixon's call, leading to the Seventh Fleet's withdrawal from the Bay of Bengal. This act boosted India's national pride significantly.

Rawat argued that diminishing Indira Gandhi's sacrifice by elevating Sardar Patel's personality undermines Patel's greatness. He noted that Sardar Patel held as much respect for Indira Gandhi as she did for him.

Tributes and Historical Impact

Earlier, Rawat paid homage to Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary. He described her as a beloved Prime Minister who was seen as a protector by the exploited and oppressed. Her strong personality earned her the title of Iron Lady.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards on October 31, 1984, outside her residence in Delhi. Her death led to communal unrest in the city, sparking anti-Sikh riots across northern India.

Rawat shared on social media that despite global recognition as a popular leader, Indira Gandhi remained unyielding even against powerful figures like Nixon. He described her as a motherly figure whose heart was filled with affection.
